Horseback Riding Tours
We invite you to come meet our wonderful horses and head out on one of our breathtaking horseback riding tours through the Pere Marquette State Forest and Boardman River Valley. Whether spring, summer, or fall every season is great by horseback. The smell of clean, fresh air will fill your lungs and the sounds of birds singing and leaves rustling are just some of what makes these horseback riding tours so great. The terrain is varied and the scenery beautiful atop hills and river valleys. There is an abundance of wildlife and almost un-ending trails to explore with your friendly Wrangler and competent horses on a trail ride you won’t soon forget.
What to Wear
Jeans or long pants are best to help protect your skin from the saddle’s leather on our trail rides. Short or long sleeves are appropriate, depending upon the weather. Remember, the majority of the ride will be in the woods, where it is a bit more shaded.
As for footwear, you must be in closed toe shoes-NO SANDALS OR FLIP FLOPS are permitted. A riding boot is best, but even some type of hiking boot or tennis shoe will suffice. The most important is that toes and heels are covered and protected.
We do have riding helmets available upon request. Riders under 18 are required to wear a helmet.
You may want to consider sunscreen or insect repellent.
You may also want to bring a change of clothing with you. A trip down the river can be a great way to cool down after hitting the dusty trail.
If the weather is extremely hot and humid please call ahead of time as rides may be limited or cancelled.
We will ride in a light rain, but not in storms. Please remember, form fitting rain jackets are much more appropriate than big rain ponchos that could blow and spook the horses.
Requirements to Ride
For the one (1) hour horseback riding tour you do not need any prior riding experience. We just ask that you be honest with your Wranglers in terms of riding experience, so that they can pick out a suitable horse for you. For all rides the following requirements are in place for the safety and comfort of both horses and riders:
- Must be at least eight (8) years old
- Must be under 250 lbs
- Must have appropriate footwear
The 1 hour trail ride is operated on a first come, first served basis. The available times are listed under the Horseback Riding page. Our recommendation is to get here at least 30 minutes prior ride time to get signed up.
For the 2 hour horseback riding tours, we do require reservations and a minimum of 4 people (2 person minimum for our overnight guests). We recommend reserving at least one (1) week in advance as we do our scheduling one week out and this way we can easily schedule your own Wrangler. At times we can get you in on shorter notice, but for an increased chance of availability we always suggest reserving as early as possible.
For the 2 hour rides you do need to meet the above stated minimum number of riders to reserve a ride time. For these rides, one of our wranglers will take your party on a private ride. We no longer bundle smaller groups together to meet the minimum number of riders. It has become much too challenging to coordinate schedules and appropriate riding abilities among mixed parties.
The children’s or buckaroo rides are available in-season (mid-June – Labor Day) between 10:30 am-11:30 am and again between 1:30 pm-2:30 pm. Please call for off-season availability. It is a parent that leads the horse, so please be certain to wear appropriate footwear- both child and parent must be in closed toe shoes for this activity.
Our season depends a lot upon the weather, so we strongly suggest calling ahead of time in early spring and late fall for more specific information regarding ride schedules. Typically, our season begins the 2nd weekend in May and at this point we offer trail rides on Saturdays and Sundays. We continue to operate, weather permitting (call if weather looks questionable) on weekends through mid-June, until our local schools get out for the summer.
Beginning mid-June, once schools are out, we operate seven (7) days a week through Labor Day. Again, please call if weather is very hot and humid or very cold and rainy as rides may be cancelled or limited.
After Labor Day, we offer trail rides on Saturdays and Sundays into the fall. Oftentimes, we run through the 3rd week in October, but weather sometimes shortens or extends our season. Please call for availability.
Please note that on occasion in our off-season months (early May – mid-June and Labor Day – late October) rides can be reserved for mid-week if you have more than six (6) riders in you group. Please call for details.
Don’t forget to wear appropriate footwear.
These horseback riding tours are for children ages 3 to 7 years old. The horse must be lead by a parent. This is a walk ride. Both parent and child must be in closed toe shoes to participate.
